Woodcock Memorial Baptist Church
Woodcock Memorial Baptist Church
Woodcock Memorial Baptist Church began in 1960 as a mission effort to the Cayce housing projects in East Nashville, TN. During the first decade the membership swelled to 500 people and buildings were expanded to accommodate the thriving church. As the neighborhood changed and the members aged, membership declined. When David Long was invited to lead the church, there remained nine faithful members. This handful of saints tenaciously kept the church going.
Since 1995, there have been many seasons of ministry at Woodcock. Both Sudanese and Haitian congregations thrived while these refugees assimilated into new jobs and churches. Fourteen lost boys from Sudan stayed in the dormitory until they were able to get on their feet and move to new opportunities. A Sudanese priest hiding from Muslim extremists was housed for a time. A weekly meal and daily ministry to the homeless, addicted and neighborhood residents continued until January 2019.
In 2010, Woodcock invited Set Free – a ministry to homeless and addicted men – to utilize our dormitory, dining room and other spaces, while we continued to meet and minister as we had over the years.
In the fall of 2018, Metro Nashville purchased the property which was located at 816 South 6th Street in Nashville adjacent to Cayce Homes for redevelopment. The Woodcock congregation now meets at Grace Community in Whites Creek Sundays at 4:00 PM.
